Recipe: Easy Pear Sauce

Tree ripened local Comice Pears.

We harvested Pears from a dear friend’s tree last week. I love the delicate flavor of them, but the rest of the family isn’t crazy about their texture (they are crisp apple fans). I knew I couldn’t eat them all up before they needed to go into the compost, so I tried something new: Pear Sauce.

When I try a new recipe, I usually use it as a guide, and add my own edits along the way. I try to keep notes, and blogging is a huge help. I made Pear Sauce for the first time, and it was so easy, I didn’t need to write it down. Anyone can do this!

I used Comice Pears for this recipe. They are so naturally sweet and tasty that I didn’t add any sugar or spice. Taste your sauce before storing, and if you need a little sweeter, add a little bit before storing.

Easy Pear Sauce


– 8 Pears

– Juice of 1/2 a Lemon

– About 1/2 Cup Water

Yields approximately 6 cups.

Pearsauce: A tasty snack or dessert.

Peel and core Pears, then slice into 2 inch sections. Place into a large pot (about 4 quarts), and add Water about 1/4 up, immersing only the Pears on the bottom. Add the juice of 1/2 a lemon. Depending on how moist the Pears are, you may add a little more or less water (super juicy Pears = less water). Heat pot on high and bring to a boil, stir along the bottom to prevent sticking, reduce heat to a low simmer and stir along the bottom every 20 minutes. Once the pears are all soft (about 1-2hrs), turn off heat and either use a potato-masher to “sauce” the soften pears, or add to a blender and let it do the work for you. Blend or mash until you get to a desired consistency. Eat fresh, freeze for later, or add the hot Pear Sauce to canning jars.

I love pear sauce! I learned the hard way last year that is really is necessary to core them before you cook them. This year I also dried quite a few when they were ripe. I sent some to our son who is in college and he said, “They taste like candy!” 🙂 To do it, I simply cut them in half, removed the stem and the core and set them cut side down onto the dehydrator trays.
