Last week my daughter came home from Preschool with a fever. It was a day where all plans I had made were put to a halt, and we shifted gears into resting and staying entertained in the house. It’s been 3 days since I jumped into any sort of normal routine. Our son hasn’t had a fever, but did get sick with a cough, exhaustion and congestion. On Friday morning, I knew this cold was going to make the rounds in the family, and I had better get prepared.
What did I do? Well, do you remember the oxygen mask advice they give on the airplane? You’re supposed to put your own oxygen mask on first, then you can help the passenger beside you. I applied that principal. I realized that between holding my babes, reading to them and checking temperatures I wouldn’t have lot of time to cook or care for myself. Once the kids were comfy under blankets watching a movie, I took a little time to get prepared.
I took our large pitcher and filled it with water. I placed 2 Quart sized jars around the house for myself. Then, I filled up water bottles for the kids and placed them where they could reach easily. Thankfully my kids love water! To help encourage more consumption, I also pulled out fun little glasses from their Great-Grandma that we usually use at dinner. My daughter requested her own “Jar” like mine, so I grabbed an old jam jar I reuse out of the cupboard. It’s important to keep your water fresh. So, at the end of the day, I usually dump out the left-over water into a plant, clean the vessel and start over with fresh water.
A batch of my Simple Apple Salad recipe took only about 5 minutes to make, and was so refreshing for a few days. I also made up a large pot of Chicken Vegetable Soup (I had some chicken stock in the freezer for such occasions). So, the soup was mostly vegetables with herbs and only took about as long to prepare as chopping up vegetables, adding Garlic, Thyme and frozen Chicken Stock. After the kids were down for the night, I whipped up some granola for the times when I’d need to eat up a quick snack, placing it into a casserole dish, I made the batch into a crumbly granola bar.
Sleep is important for healing. I tried my best the past couple of days to nap when the kids were napping. On Saturday, that was impossible as the both napped at separate times. They were also starting to feel better! So, I went to bed early instead. It was a hard decision to make since I hadn’t enjoyed any quiet time to read or talk with The Man. p.s.
